Pretoria Central at a glance

Pretoria, in Gauteng Province, is the administrative capital of South Africa. Known as "Jacaranda City" for its jacaranda trees around the city of Pretoria, it's also home to universities and government buildings. The semi-circular Union Buildings encompass the president's offices and hosted Nelson Mandela's inauguration. Nearby is the Voortrekker Monument, honouring 19th-century Afrikaans settlers from the Cape Colony.

Pretoria was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius and chose a spot on the banks of the Monkeys River to be the new capital of the South African Republic (ZAR). The Voortrekker Monument Imposes an edifice commemorating the Afrikaans settlers who arrived in the country during the 1830s.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve is a spectacular reserve holding Zebra, wildebeest & giraffes on a reserve made up of thickets & grasses, plus hiking & biking trails.


Freedom Park Heritage Site & Heritage Museum has a phenomenal history on the Hilltop memorial to South African freedom fighters & a museum tracing the nation's history.

There are many shopping malls/ centres such as Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, The Grove Mall and the Kolonnade Shopping Centre.


Well-known Restaurants in the area: Kung Fu Cowboy, Somethings Cooking and Ashoka.


Schools in the Area are Pretoria High School for Girls, Pretoria Boys High School and Crawford Schools Pretoria.
